Singapore's intensely competent, scrupulously uncorrupt, and slightly dictatorial Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has accepted a 36 percent pay cut, bringing his salary down to a still-comfortable $1.7 million a year. After an embarrassingly close victory in last year's elections, Lee set up an independent review committee on governmental salaries to check populist anger. And yesterday, the panel announced changes including Lee's cut, a slightly larger dock for ministers, and a more than 50 percent drop in the salary for the (mostly honorific) office of the presidency. Say what you want about Lee (actually, better not: the country has some of the most fearsome libel laws of any developed nation), he listens to his constituents.
While Lee is likely the highest
paid world leader in the world,
Chinese president Hu Jintao, leader of the world's second-largest economy, sits
near the other end of the spectrum. If government statistics are to be
believed, Hu makes just over $10,000 a year. Officials at the ministerial
level make that same amount, and lower ranking Party apparatchiks can make as
little as a few hundred dollars a month. "While the
benefits, like housing, are very good, the salary is low, that's definite,"
says Yiyi Lu, a Beijing-based China analyst. Even with benefits, Chinese
government salaries encourage corruption by bestowing high power but low
salaries on people who have very little transparency over their actions.
Whereas in Singapore ministers remain clean in part to keep their seven-figure
salaries, in China one always wonders how those officials making, say, $1500 a
month can afford
those Rolexes.

The USA Today is boldly doing a number* on the gods of college coaching, that pantheon of Ego and Money. Quick self-awareness quiz: Who among us would not behave as many of them behave, given the influence and power they wield? Considering the incredible rock star status these big time coaches enjoy, usually in some places (Baton Rogue, Tuscaloosa, Storrs, Eugene) where there is little competition for their adoration, can any of us honestly make judgments about self-interested conduct that we ourselves, in the same situation, would be very inclined, given our human nature, to emulate?
Because, according to the article's salary chart, coaching can be a pretty lucrative gig. Perhaps we should start saying, more aptly, that successful touring musicians "enjoy college-coach status."
(The chart shows that Rick Pitino makes seven million bucks coaching basketball at Louisville. FYI: Pitino started hanging with the horse people when he was coaching in Lexington--at UK--a couple of jobs ago; his basketball salary, while not incidental, is certainly not required any longer.)
USA TODAY has recently published a series of articles that conclude that these guys have a disproportionate influence on leadership in many of America's institutions of higher learning. Hard to argue against that.
Let's face it: Entertainment pays much better than education so problems exist when those industries overlap. Inequity breeds unfairness, diminished oversight and ultimately corruption. Self-evidently.
Robert Lipsyte, the award-winning sports writer, said a day earlier in the same paper, bleakly, that he really didn't see an end to this problem. The will, he concludes, to hold powerful people accountable is a hard one to summon. All around us, everyday, we see things being done by others that are not good for the common good. We are frustrated but silent.
We have to speak out as individuals so that all voices are one. I sense that to be the commonality of the "occupy" effort--to unite the voices of the oppressed. (Beware: The Truth Often Begets Trouble. Even right here near River City: teachingintheshadowoftheswoosh.blogspot.com)
But only the expressed will of the people, all of us demanding accountability, will challenge the growing momentum of a more entertaining but less moral culture.
In an ideal world, the deep-pocketed athletic conferences, the authentic forces behind these monolithic college sports programs, would split away from the colleges and become legitimate private enterprises that employ these coaches. It's that simple.
But, equally ideally, our millionaire legislators would forego their public salaries and retirements and pay their own staffs and travel expenses until we are out of this mess they have gotten us into.
Equally ideally, big shot bureaucratic employees who have surrounded themselves with expensive sycophants and spent public money to win friends would revise their retirements to reflect something closer to that of people who worked for a living.
But that will never happen until we demand it and right now--Go Ducks--we don't want it to. But one day Eugene will be State College and we might. We have tough times ahead. We are looking for incorruptible people willing to do exasperating work on behalf of an irrational public.
Sounds impossible and depresses writers like Lipsyte.
But we can start with our own personal awareness that this corruption is ubiquitous and the only thing keeping a lot of us from cheating, too, is opportunity. We must start with our own humbling self-awareness BUT move quickly to holding EVERYBODY accountable, even our icons.
There is something sad about the Ducks becoming more like the Buckeyes and the Crimson Tide but don't tell anybody that ton January 2nd. Drinks all around!
There is also something sad about the Southridge High girls or the Westview boys getting (faux) national basketball rankings. Tuning teenagers and history teachers into celebrities in the impressionable world of public high schools is an aberrant alchemy--very black magic.
Trickle-down megalomania.
Attention investigative journalists: We should proactively scrutinize those places in the public domain where power has been concentrated and leadership is entrenched...and from where public information is not easily made public. Here in Oregon, we shouldn't have to wait until a fifteen-year-old in Happy Valley has the guts to speak Truth to Power.
This is what i call quality reply.
Thanks for your reply here. :)
Thanks
With such a growing economy and still going into billions, theres no reason they could not afford such huge salary. physician assistant salary
Over the past few years, there has been a growing tendency to dub Muslims as terrorists. And leading from the front in this blame game is none other than the superpower, the United States. It is extremely sad that such a tolerant and loving community is being dubbed as behind the terror outfits.
It is gross injustice that the Muslims of this world are being treated as second class. How many of you think that Muslims are behind the terror plots, no matter where they happen? No doubt most of the terror outfits are comprised of Muslims, but is it correct to say that all Muslims are terrorists? If we look at the community as a whole, the Muslims will outnumber almost the rest. Indeed most of the rich nations are Muslim nations.
There are a few misguided youth who have spoilt the spirit of Islam, disturbed the Muslim norms, created havoc in the world, revoked the laws of the land, disturbed peace, affected fraternal relations, and above all marginalised the facets and tenets of the KORAN --the Holy Book-- that has been leading several generations ever since it came into being. It is not just the Muslims that bow before the Koran, I being a non-Muslim, too, bow before the most sacred book, and I have no doubt in saying that millions of non-Muslims treat the Koran as their HOLY BOOK--much like the Geeta of Hindus, the Bible of Christains, and the Guru Granth Sahib Ji of Sikhs. All these sacred, religious books preach their followers fraternity, brotherhood, and love for all --no matter which religion they belong. Wouldn't it have been wonderful, had all of us followed our religion, keeping in mind the sanctity of all other religions?
this is my request to everyone..standby your faith, your religion, your prayer, your worship, your norms, but for God's sake don't use the pious name of God for violence, waging wars, letting bloodshed, diluting sacred human values, massacring men, women, children and old n infirm,---just for the sake of POWER n SUPREMACY over others.
ASK God when, you leave for haven, how correct are those indulging in gross human rights violations just to gain power n prestige just to create dread, fear n havoc in the world.
Muslims are a religious community, who believe in the sanctity n virtues of the Koran n the Prophet --the Great Prophet, who taught them to fight those who kill innocents, to wage a jihad against those who r antihuman-- not against all n sundry..
So, how did Muslims started being dubbed as terrorists? Being a community rich of strength n valor, the powerful Muslim lords saw themselves reaping dividends by ruling over the world. Just this was the beginning...n the rest is history, v much the present--may b d future too.
But can we let the blood of our brethren, n fellow citizens flow like this in suicide bombings, bomb blasts n all such atrocious tactics of the so-called terrorists? The disgruntled few r in a state of dissatisfaction n to satisfy themselves have started waging a war on innocents that they call as jihad. however, they fail to understand that in doing so, they have tarnished the sacred name of ISLAM, n invited criticism from world over..resulting in the world calling the entire Muslim community as associated with terrorists.
For God's sake stop calling Muslims terrorists. They are a community that loves its religion, its God, its Prophet, and upkeep human values. The dissatisfied n misled among them r the real culprits, who need to be justified. I have so many Muslim friends and trust me, they all believe in upkeeping human values, they believe in brotherhood, fraternity, their heart cries at the suicide bombings, their lives r disturbed by terrorist activities. They love humanity, first.
Do you know so many Muslims have died in the suicide bombings and bomb blasts? If the terroists who care so much for their religion, loved their religion n fellow Muslims, will they kill them? Will they place bombs at places where muslims r predominant? will they target muslim locations n habitations?
they have targetted muslim habitations..hyderabad in INDIA is a glaring example, where so many muslims were killed in the blast incide the mosque. such disgruntled elements placed the bombs inside the mosque only to create misunderstanding between different communities so that people fight each other out, which would result in the victory of the terrorists.
