The Iowa Caucuses are tonight, meaning it's do-or-die time for Rick Santorum, the GOP field's latest flavor of the week. A strong third place finish from Santorum will likely provoke a new round of media attention for the former Pennsylvania senator heading into the New Hampshire primary.
Buzzfeed's newly revamped political team was on the ground in Iowa this week to ask Santorum supporters why they are enthusiastic about the once-fringe candidate. In addition to unsurprising responses like "Good Christian Man" and "Strong Family Values," a young woman named Nheylin, describes Santorum's appeal as, "He knows about Honduras."
Considering some of the other candidates who have garnered attention in this primary, it's possible that Nheylin is simply giving Santorum credit for being aware of the existence of a small country north of Nicaragua. More likely, she's referring to his surprisingly consistent emphasis on Latin America policy.
Santorum attacked the U.S. handling of the 2009 coup in Honduras right from the start:
[T]he Honduran people had had enough. They sent President Manuel Zelaya, a Chavez wannabe, packing.
Bravo for them? Not according to President Obama, who has insisted on the reinstatement of this democratically elected president. True, Zelaya was democratically elected to the presidency - initially, in 2005. But ever since, he's been trying to copy Chavez's power grab.
That's not quite how most Latin American governments -- including pro-American ones -- or Honduras' own truth and reconciliation commission saw it. Also, the U.S. did eventually establish diplomatic relations with Honduras' new government. But Santorum does seem to have closely followed the issue.
Santorum has also been among the Republicans in the race beating the drum on the threat of Islamist infiltration in Latin America. This also ties in to his stance on Honduras:
Well, I've spent a lot of time and concern -- and Rick mentioned this earlier -- about what's going on in Central and South America. I'm very concerned about the militant socialists and there -- and the radical Islamists joining together, bonding together.
I'm concerned about the spread of socialism and that this administration, with -- time after time, whether it was the delay in moving forward on Colombia's free trade agreement, whether it was turning our back to the Hondurans and standing up for democracy and the -- and the rule of law.
And we took the side with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro for a corrupt President. We've sent all the wrong signals to Central and South America.
Again, I'm not quite sure that either side in the Honduras dispute really exemplified the "rule of law," but the argument seems to be that if Chavez and Castro are against something, the United States must, by default, be for it. Santorum even brings up Honduras when he talks about Iran:
If we are in a position where Iran is close to getting a nuclear weapon, then action needs to be taken. It simply can’t be ignored. I mean, Imagine this. Imagine if Honduras has been making noise about trying to destroy the United States and that they were developing a nuclear weapon, and we had a report saying they were in a few months of developing a nuclear weapon. Would we just sit there knowing that they had made comments that they would destroy our country and they were about to get a nuclear weapon? Would we sit there and allow them do that? I don’t think any Americans would let that happen.
I don't quite follow this, but it's fair to say that if you're the type of Iowa voter for whom a strong stance on Honduras is the top priority, Santorum may be your man.
It makes sense given Santorum's fairly Manichean worldview, which is centered around a global struggle to confront the "cancer" of radical Islam, that he would fixate on Honduras. It's a case where the overall good guys vs. bad guys narrative (a corrupt, populist, anti-American leader is overthrown) can overwhelm the inconvenient facts. (Rather than resigning in the face of a popular uprising, he was dragged out of bed by the military and put on a plane out of the country in the middle of the night.) It's similar to his views on Egypt, where he has attacked Obama for throwing U.S.-ally Hosni Mubarak "under the bus" in favor of anti-Israel extremists. Evidently "democratic" and "rule of law" for Santorum, are synonyms for pro-American and pro-Israel.
Santorum's railing against the dark side get a little sloppy sometimes, such as when he promised to "go to war with China" or called Iran's Green Revolution the "real" Arab Spring. (One that conveniently didn't involve Arabs.) But unlike Romney, his foreign policy views are unflaggingly consistent, and unlike Paul, they're in line with the GOP mainstream. It's probably not enough to win him the nomination, but it's not surprising that he's getting a second look from the party faithful.
Attractive candidate but can't beat Obama
Thanks for this insight. Alot will be written and said about Santorum in the coming weeks, but his pro-war and "anti-women's rights" talk make his a weak candidate to go up against Obama. Voters in 2012 will be a different - and larger - lot than those older, affluent Tea Party types of fall 2010. GOP leadership apparently don't get this.
Republicans have been mean-spirited to minorities and gays and indifferent to women and youth. If the parety is counting on aging, white men and their dutiful women to win the day, that's laughable and will lose the WH for them
Santorum is very close to Honduras
His maids are from Honduras, his gardeners, valet and drivers are too.
"I don't quite follow this, but it's fair to say that if you're the type of Iowa voter for whom a strong stance on Honduras is the top priority, Santorum may be your man."
Funniest thing I've read today.
What Santorum knows about Honduras.
Allow me to put the 2009 Honduran crisis into terms you may understand. What if right now during 2012 primary season Obama announced he was going to tear up the Constitution and write a new one, dissolving all but the Executive Branch of government? And what if he denied state-run medical services to the poor unless they voted “yes” on a referendum ballot in support of this extreme proposition? And what if there were no way to stop him, no law enforcement, no jails that would hold him, violent rioters in the street acting with impunity, and, perhaps worst of all, no language in the Constitution allowing for impeachment?
That’s what Zelaya was doing in Honduras. Do you think the U.S. Congress and the Supreme Court would allow him to go through with it? And what about the Military, sworn to protect the Constitution? Would they cross their arms and allow a rogue President to tear it up?
I know some people derive a sense of enjoyment from belittling the plight of smaller nations, but I would expect opinion-leaders of a serious publication about foreign policy to abstain from such diversion and approach a subject on which they are ignorant with a quantum of respect.
Santorum was one of the few people along with Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Connie Mack, and Jim DeMint, and the WSJ's Mary Anastasia O'Grady, who actually had an informed opinion on what was truly happening in Honduras.
i think Rick does not know about any thing !!
he is placing the shoots in the air. :D
I think yes you are right !!
Rick does not know about thornson. :(
Over the past few years, there has been a growing tendency to dub Muslims as terrorists. And leading from the front in this blame game is none other than the superpower, the United States. It is extremely sad that such a tolerant and loving community is being dubbed as behind the terror outfits.
It is gross injustice that the Muslims of this world are being treated as second class. How many of you think that Muslims are behind the terror plots, no matter where they happen? No doubt most of the terror outfits are comprised of Muslims, but is it correct to say that all Muslims are terrorists? If we look at the community as a whole, the Muslims will outnumber almost the rest. Indeed most of the rich nations are Muslim nations.
There are a few misguided youth who have spoilt the spirit of Islam, disturbed the Muslim norms, created havoc in the world, revoked the laws of the land, disturbed peace, affected fraternal relations, and above all marginalised the facets and tenets of the KORAN --the Holy Book-- that has been leading several generations ever since it came into being. It is not just the Muslims that bow before the Koran, I being a non-Muslim, too, bow before the most sacred book, and I have no doubt in saying that millions of non-Muslims treat the Koran as their HOLY BOOK--much like the Geeta of Hindus, the Bible of Christains, and the Guru Granth Sahib Ji of Sikhs. All these sacred, religious books preach their followers fraternity, brotherhood, and love for all --no matter which religion they belong. Wouldn't it have been wonderful, had all of us followed our religion, keeping in mind the sanctity of all other religions?
this is my request to everyone..standby your faith, your religion, your prayer, your worship, your norms, but for God's sake don't use the pious name of God for violence, waging wars, letting bloodshed, diluting sacred human values, massacring men, women, children and old n infirm,---just for the sake of POWER n SUPREMACY over others.
ASK God when, you leave for haven, how correct are those indulging in gross human rights violations just to gain power n prestige just to create dread, fear n havoc in the world.
Muslims are a religious community, who believe in the sanctity n virtues of the Koran n the Prophet --the Great Prophet, who taught them to fight those who kill innocents, to wage a jihad against those who r antihuman-- not against all n sundry..
So, how did Muslims started being dubbed as terrorists? Being a community rich of strength n valor, the powerful Muslim lords saw themselves reaping dividends by ruling over the world. Just this was the beginning...n the rest is history, v much the present--may b d future too.
But can we let the blood of our brethren, n fellow citizens flow like this in suicide bombings, bomb blasts n all such atrocious tactics of the so-called terrorists? The disgruntled few r in a state of dissatisfaction n to satisfy themselves have started waging a war on innocents that they call as jihad. however, they fail to understand that in doing so, they have tarnished the sacred name of ISLAM, n invited criticism from world over..resulting in the world calling the entire Muslim community as associated with terrorists.
For God's sake stop calling Muslims terrorists. They are a community that loves its religion, its God, its Prophet, and upkeep human values. The dissatisfied n misled among them r the real culprits, who need to be justified. I have so many Muslim friends and trust me, they all believe in upkeeping human values, they believe in brotherhood, fraternity, their heart cries at the suicide bombings, their lives r disturbed by terrorist activities. They love humanity, first.
Do you know so many Muslims have died in the suicide bombings and bomb blasts? If the terroists who care so much for their religion, loved their religion n fellow Muslims, will they kill them? Will they place bombs at places where muslims r predominant? will they target muslim locations n habitations?
they have targetted muslim habitations..hyderabad in INDIA is a glaring example, where so many muslims were killed in the blast incide the mosque. such disgruntled elements placed the bombs inside the mosque only to create misunderstanding between different communities so that people fight each other out, which would result in the victory of the terrorists.
