In al-Shabab-controlled regions of Somalia, anything deemed un-Islamic is outlawed. This includes mustaches, the World Cup, wearing bras, and dancing at weddings. The militant Islamist group recently added something new to that list: Samosas.

How can a seemingly harmless pastry be un-Islamic? Apparently, it's the shape. Samosas are fried in a triangular shape, which al-Shabab finds to be strikingly similar to the Christian Holy Trinity. Samosas, known as sambusas in the region, are often enjoyed to break the fast during Ramadan. But now, those caught selling, cooking or eating sambusas could face harsh punishment -- if history is any guide. The militant group follows a strict interpretation of Islam, enforcing their moral rulings to the utmost degree. In 2009, al-Shabab gunmen went village to village, rounding up women who were found wearing bras. Traditionally moderate Muslim Somalis were horrified as the women were beaten, their bras forcibly removed, and then told to publicly shake their chests for the men. Al-Shabab's justification for the public humiliation was that the bras promoted deception, a breach of Islam.

Last year, radio stations were shut down for playing music. Men and women who are not related can no longer shake hands, or even speak to one another in public. Women who are found working in public places face execution in some cases. Women and young girls alike have been arrested and flogged for not wearing hijabs. Watching soccer in general has been outlawed, but al-Shabab took a particular disliking to the World Cup since Somali boys and men were watching soccer instead of joining the group's jihad against the government. Cinemas no longer show the matches after numerous theaters were attacked with grenades.

It seems anything remotely enjoyable (and triangular) is prohibited, and now, al-Shabab's control has struck at the core of human survival. As Somalia starves to death, the militant group bans a staple food in East African culture as it is too "Christian." Humanitarian aid from Western organizations has been mostly outlawed, with UN famine reports called "sheer propaganda". Al-Shabab's outlandish rulings may cost millions of lives.

LOL

I wonder how many millions of years need to pass before opposable thumbs come to Somalia.

really?

Laugh out loud? That's your response to abuse, starvation and oppression? How callous and purile of you. And to suggest that this behavior has something to do with evolutionary development? Wow. I'd say that's borderline racism . I agree, al-shabob's laws are ridiculous, however your comments are inappropriate and trite.

Did I just get a ticket from the PC police?

I think I did! Though I feel for the women, children and animals trapped in that insufferable shit-hole of a psuedo-nation there's something to be said for common sense and intelligence - two qualities woefully lacking in Somalia. We've consistently seen superstition, terrorism, FGM and piracy from this country, and now the sheer stupidity of banning samosas during a time of famine. Yes, that is a LOL-worthy decision, so you can untwist your little white panties at once.

I wish FP would focus more on Somaliland, a people and nation worth investing in and learning from rather than gawking at the knuckle-dragging, slack-jawed Islamic thugs in Somalia and their bone-headed decisions.

Machiavelli, they have no oil/natural gas

So who cares what happens there? Feel bad for the folks on the ground but at the same time I can think of about a million better uses of any aid money going to that pustule of a country.

Somalia's al-Shabaab militants ban samosas

Militant Islamist fighters last week used vehicles mounted with loudspeakers to announce the bizarre ruling across the regions of the war-torn country it controls. he extremist group has offered no official explanation for the ban on the triangular snacks, which are commonly cooked up and served across the Horn of Africa. But it is believed the organisation took offence at the three-sided savouries' supposed resemblance to symbol of the Christian Holy Trinity. Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper on Tuesday reported that residents of the Somali town of Afgoye sasha grey, 20 miles south of the capital Mogadishu, had confirmed the samosa ban had been imposed. The fried snacks, usually filled with spicy meat or vegetables, have been served for centuries in the East African country. The UN last week declared a famine in two parts of the country and warned millions face death from starvation. Al-Shabaab had previously suggested it would allow foreign agencies to bring in vital food aid to prevent its people from dying. But on Friday the group denied the famine even existed and accused Western governments of inventing the crisis as a propaganda tool.

People around the world that

People around the world that hate America do not hate us because of our freedom, regardless of the bullshit the government teaches us. They hate us because of our imperialistic, monetary driven foreign policy that deprives them of freedom. We constantly invade harmless third world countries in the heat of some perceived threat to our security, only to find several years later and billions (or trillions) of dollars wasted that it was a mistake. All the while, our multinational corporations gain by taking that nation's resources for their own personal use and profit. The military has become a tool of the elite to pull the strings of unstable foreign governments and to control the world's resources. It's doesn't take extreme intelligence to see this when examples abound every virtually every month at some point in the news. RIO Anybody who can't see this is truly blind to the corruption that occurs in our political system..
