Angela Merkel's 'middle ages' response to bin Laden news

The Christian Science Monitor reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel's recent statement that she was "pleased that we managed to kill bin Laden" has provoked some pretty strong reactions from other political leaders, even within her own party:

“These are revenge fantasies one shouldn’t indulge in. That’s the Middle Ages,” said Siegfried Kauder, a member of Merkel’s Christian Democrats and chairman of the parliament’s legal affairs committee.

The deputy floor leader of the Christian Democrats, Ingrid Fischbach, called it inappropriate for a Christian to express joy at a premeditated killing of a fellow human. And Hartfried Wolff, legal spokesman for the Free Democrats, Merkel’s coalition partners in government, agreed: “I just cannot take any joy out of someone else’s death.”

Those are her political friends. Her foes want her to explain her comments in parliament and the Green politician Katrin Goering-Eckhardt, vice president of the Bundestag, said: “Killing a person is no reason to celebrate.”

Unless there's a video somewhere of Merkel shooting off a pistol while driving donuts on an ATV, this response seems just a little bit over the top.

Nothing Over the Top About it, Quite German

Given German history, the character of German political parties, and the background of the Chancellor herself the objections to her verbiage are understandable and appropriate.

Legally and culturally, post-war Germany has tried to play well others, embedding and coordinating the external activities of the state with partners in Europe and the international community. Of course, this means signing up for and playing by lots of rules. While the German state and people have become more interested in rules in international relations since unity the United States increasingly acts as if rules are for everyone else.

Americans easily comprehend objections to American behavior when voiced by German Greens and Social Democrats. After all, to American eyes the European Left's interest in the legal foundations of international relations look amusingly like a kind of high functioning autism.

Yet the years of German SPD/Green governance has left the USA poorly prepared to deal with principled objections to American behavior from Germany's center-right. It seems Americans forget that the CDU stands for Christian Democratic Union of Germany. The CDU/CSU ruling coalition are not merely conservative parties as in the UK or France, but conservative parties informed by Christian principles. This not only means asserting the country's Christian heritage, like American conservatives enjoy doing, but also affirming explicitly Christian ethics. Schadenfreude, while German, is not Christian. The Chancellor was reminded of this not only by her peers but by religious figures, including the Catholic military bishop Franz-Josef Oberbeck,
the CDU’s Working Group of Engaged Catholics, and the spokesman for the Evangelical Church in Germany.

I am sure that all of these critics knew that they were not only addressing a CDU/CSU Chancellor but a Lutheran pastor's daughter's as well. No doubt the criticism hurt and the Chancellor will adjust her tongue appropriately.

Angela Merkel gets small dose of her own medicine

Too funny that Angela 'Naked Shorts' Merkel gets caught up in the very same law she uses to harrass German dissenters who don't agree with her or even official Holocaust death estimates.Usually those found guilty of such an unthinkable thought crime in Germany get almost the same amount of years as if they'd commited the crime they commented on.Ha.

I thought she should have gone to jail for lieing about Euro bonds being (ha),'naked shorted',but instead Germany gets the NYSE franchise for lieing about naked short selling bringing down the market.Just like her fellow and Barack Obama et.al.'s terrorist ally Sheikh Mohamed Al Rashid bin Maktoum who got over 20%+ ownership of the former U.S.NASDAQ - all because his country has hosted untold money laundering for the likes of Slick Dick Cheney and his Haliburton mafia happily ensconced in that 'democratic' Arab alley's kingdom of Dubai.Also that Sheik(Mohammed Al Rashid bin
Maktoum) who we all adore(certainly Bill Clinton and the Bush family do) and his Kingdom or Shiekdom or whatever of Dubai is the one who allowed the $100,000 to be sent by the infamously tortured Kalid Sheik Mohamed from on to Venice,Florida for Mohamed Atta(of Germany fame),who was training at Jeb Bush's pal Wally Hilliard's terrorist flight training school by two Dutch,Holland or Netherlands boys(Rudi Dekkers and Arne Kruithof) at Huffman Aviation in Venice,Florida..

The 9/11 Commission report,or whitewash,mentions Atta cashing that substantial cashiers check at the Kwik-Chek in Venice,Florida but omits mention of Makram Chams who was the owner of that Kwik-Chek .As it turned out Mr.Makram Chams,a Lebanese American 'gentleman' turns out to have been an employee of of the military industrial Titan Corp of San Diego now owned by Level-3 Corporation who did so well in the military indudtrial private sector and even played a role at Abu Ghraibe.I presume Angela was pleased about that as well...just too shy to admit it.
