Salman Taseer, the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, was gunned down by one of his bodyguards today in a crowded marketplace -- the highest-profile killing in Pakistan since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the latest blow to the country's beleaguered civilian government. Pakistan's interior minister has suggested that Taseer's killing was related to his support of repealing the country's controversial blasphemy law, which earned him the ire of Pakistan's religious parties.
Nevertheless, you'd think that those who supported Taseer's assassination would be relegated to the lunatic fringe -- or at least be reticent about shouting their praise for the act from the rooftops. Not so. Admirers of the gunman, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, have set up a Facebook page to commemorate the killer. In a few short hours, the page has been flooded with hundreds of posts by supporters lionizing their newfound hero.
"May Allah protect Malik Mumtaz; he has indeed made us very proud as Muslims," reads one representative post written by Kamran Qureshi who, if his Facebook information is to be believed, resides in Lahore. Sounds like the Pakistani security services just got the names of a number of individuals with whom they might want to have a conversation.
At this time of great tragedy, it’s time to pause and ask why Pakistan has evolved so differently from India:

With all due respect to Taseer, he too underestimated the extremist grip on the Pakistani society.
Pakistan’s plunge into religious extremism predates Zia-ul-Haq’s era. The blasphemy law is just the tip of the iceberg…
about this assasination is that the crime scene was not hosed down immediately. Why is that? Water shortage (hard to believe after all the floods)? Or are the investigators slipping up again?
Dear David you wrote:
"Sounds like the Pakistani security services just got the names of a number of individuals with whom they might want to have a conversation. "
Tut-Tut.
Now this line is a giveaway that you DON'T know your Pakistan.
This is pakistan we are talking about, the land of the pure - literally speaking. The number of individuals we are talking about who feel that the assassin was justified in killing Salman Taseer would amount to like a huge majority of the population.
After all the assassin was acting on his beliefs that the anti blasphemy law in pakistan which in this case is being used to falsely implicate Aasia Bibi, is supreme. Most pakistanis want the islamic anti-blasphemy law which mandates the death penalty to those who denigrate islam. Most non-muslims in pakistan live in fear of coming in the clutches of this law.
The mullahs have already held strikes and brought that country to a standstill demanding that Aasia Bibi be executed as per the law. Salman Taseer dared to argue that this law be repealed and further that Aasia Bibi be released.
What we are seeing in Pakistan is the more pious taking down the less pious. The more pious are better armed, have state support, the support of the majority of the population and the talibs. It is only a matter of time before they take over completely.
The more pious are simply going to snuff out any opposition in their path to total control of that nation.
Salman Taseer and his family living extravagant lives, drinking alcohol, the women of the family going about without the purdah and being photographed in western clothes, and generally living it up in that desperately poor uneducated country, was an eyesore to the general population as it is.
It was only a matter of time before someone pulled the plug.
Now this sends a message out to the rest of the elite in that country.
1. No more extravagant display of wealth
2. Keep the women strictly in the purdah
3. Do not invite the wrath of the mullahs by being politically incorrect. (What is politically correct is what the mullahs ordain - one has to keep up to date on the fatwas issued by them from time to time on various issues)
Dear David,
Again going back to your last line, you wrote:
"Sounds like the Pakistani security services just got the names of a number of individuals with whom they might want to have a conversation. "
I'm curious, which security services in pakistan did you have in mind?
The assassin belonged to one such security service, in fact was from one of the elite anti-terrorist units and was deployed to provide security to the Governer from the jihadi terrorists. Turns out that the security guard was a Jihadi sympathizer himself. (Sounds a bit like the wolf guarding the pen).
Of the other security and intel agencies the lesser said, the better.
1. The ISI - Infamous for training and arming the taliban and directing them to attack the coailition forces in Afghanistan or trainging and sending the mumbai 26/11 attackers.
2. The IB, MIA which have been blamed for kidnappings, torture, targetted political killings in NWFP, Balochistan and Karachi?
There is not one organization, security or otherwise that has not been jihadised there. Please understand that the entire society has been radicalized. The process has been on for several decades, from the time of Zulfikar Bhutto to Zia to the current era, the jihadi forces have gradually gained ground within that society. What we see happening in Af-Pak are only the symptoms of this disease.
Pakistan is an islamic country which is composed of 95% muslims and 5% other believers. We as muslims do not call any other religion bad or wrong and all minorities practice their beliefs as they want to, rather the blasphemy law covers all religions such as Christanity where a Muslim is not allowed to say wrong words about Hazrat Eissa (Alaihai Salam) also, so why should it be repealed.... it is our religion.
It is the always the same story with the west calling others societies bad .... this is our way of life and we like it what is others problem, do we say American or for that matter any other country's way of living is bad.... NO... I would suggest to all to please see the UK Law Book also where if anyone uses wrong words on a simple cleric (Father or Nun) and is proven wrong and does not repent, his or her sentence is DEATH.... please change that and stop worrying about our laws..... Aasia Bibi was tried and proven Guilty in the court and was sentenced to death (she has option to go for High and Supreme Court also), their is no injustice.... if this is the law of our land it is the LAW, we don't question ur laws so please do not question ours (The world knows what happened after 9/11 in USA to muslims and their businesses - so why talk about tolerance.... look within your own society..... what was the mistake of those innocent muslims who were killed, their businesses destroyed...... Iraq is an open book 1M civilians killed till date, Afghanistan ..... more than 700K killed and no Osama till date ..... even his wanted page doesnot show any connection with 9/11..... so why attack afghanistan and iraq..... please note action of so called collation forces is fuelling the extremism in Muslims..... I can give u a number of examples more if everyone need to see).
Since everyone is here is against the so called extremism please go ahead register a case of committed genocide of millions of innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan on collation countries and their leaders.... my my these are not extremists.... right
Why discuss intelligence agencies of Pakistan when thousands of people of iraq, afghanistan and other muslim countries have been taken away my USA and collation forces without putting any charges or without any reason to unknown destinations never to be heard from or of..... blame these leaders and orchestrators of these wars.... this extremism is there because of these bloody, uncalled for acts (called war on terror).... Iraq was attacked due to WMDs ..... where are they?..... why did millions of muslims loose their lives .... Why?
What about drone attacks in pakistan killing hundreds of innocent people which include women and children ..... this fuels extremism..... these acts of war by collation forces produce terrorists..... these world sponsored acts of terror are the real fuel..... stop them and terrorists will vanish.
Jihad is called a war for right.... and believe u all in me.... we all should be part of it regardless of our religious beliefs against anything thats not right..... this salman taseer was not right..... the law was not passed by Zia-ul Haq or any dictator it was passed by over whelming majority by National Assembly of Pakistan in 1992 (democratic Government). If he wanted any change he should have been more logical in his approach towards the problem.... make a bill and take it to national assembly (vote and get it approved).... shouting never solved anything it creates problems only.
These wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are and never were called for..... if we want to stop this extremism we need to stop murders in cold blood in Afghanistan, Iraq and pakistan and all other countries, so that common sense can prevail again..... by the way Talibans were made, financed, weaponized by USA in war against USSR.... who is to be blamed.... why wasn't any re-habiliation plan made at that time..... these are a few things i have mentioned ahich has led to this situation u all are a better judge now...
Thanks
My dear AJKhan7,
Thanks for the rather longish reply. It is quite an effort on your part for which I commend you.
Long story short, your extended commentary is little more than a bunch of half truths that you're somehow trying to twist to bolster your argument.
The bottom line from that rather incoherent and confused diatribe that one can gather is, that you and your fellow pakistanis are flawless and that great evil has been done to you and the muslims of the world.
I agree, after all you are from the 'Land of the Pure', and the hapless victim in question was clearly less than pure.
The blasphemy law that you so extoll the virtues of, has been exclusively applied to amongst others, the Ahmediya muslims, Christians, Hindoos, and Sikhs. You all don't apply that law to the shias yet because their numbers within your nation are such that a bloodbath will result should someone try.
It was amusing reading your response, it was very enlightening and entertaining, and so once again congratulations for your effort.
Dear John,
I wrote events (facts) ... world history.... if u want to discuss on it please do that... dont be vague be specific and i will reply to you.
The english phrases do not prove u r write.... Please prove it or don't write comments on things you do not have full information... You can better use your time and imagination on something more constructive.

To put things into perspective
I strongly condemn killing of Taseer. However, for many reasons, least of which is his views on blasphemy law, he was the second most hated person in Pakistan, first being the President of Pakistan. This may be another reason why the facebook page was flooded with comments.
The security guard who killed Taseer has become a facebook hero in Pakistan.
However low internet penetration in pakistan is, if one were to profile the people who have access to facebook in pakistan, one would assume two things: The average facebook user in pakistan is:
1. Educated
2. Middle class or elite and rich.
Now here is the rub. The assassin is a hero amongst the educated and the people with money.
We are not talking about the masses here who are poor, god fearing, and pious. We are talking about people who have access to a computer and the internet here.
I'll leave it for you and your readers to judge for yourselves where that country stands today.
I am Pakistani and while S.Taseer was corrupt, there are no celebrations or joyous Pakistani masses applauding his assasin. The national papers are all shocked and stunned - and on my FB page and my friends its all sympathy and shock. The religous right is and has always been small - at best pulling 3% of the national vote. Don't forget ST was VOTED into power. The problem is the right has the weapons and the right levers of actual violent power. Its tremendous leverage in a country like Pakistan with weak institutions. How many ordinary people will shout out support for moderation when the bloody governor of the largest province, a top security target, can be taken down?
If you check Pakistani blogs and online forums the situation is still horrible but a bit better. Its generally 50-50 split. However as a Pakistani myself I am shocked and dissapointed its even that close.

KARACHI: More than 500 religious scholars belonging to the Barelvi school of thought paid rich tributes to the assassin of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on Tuesday and urged ‘Muslims across the country’ to boycott the funeral ceremony.
The largest body of the Barelvi group, the Jamaate Ahle Sunnat Pakistan (JASP), whose directions are considered binding on every other organisation that follows the same school of thought, issued a statement saying that “No Muslim should attend the funeral or even try to pray for Salmaan Taseer or even express any kind of regret or sympathy over the incident.”
people are afraid to discuss the murder.intolerance is touching its height.May God protect us from all evil.
The majority of Pakistanis have become evil and deranged. This is Islamic fascism at its worst, and it's spreading to every corner of the globe. Time to quarantine Pakistan.
i endorse Krypter.of all the mental patients fanatics are the most dangerous and they are by millions in pakistan.with due respect it is fall out of the afghan jehad in which united states was in the forefront.pakistans role was that of a mercinary.i am a great fan of martin luther king junior.when his death aniversary was declared a public holiday mrs daulton director of the american center karachi twice invited me to the function.z a bhutto was recently murdered in pakistan, some say with us connivance,.idont but i was depressed.through this post i appologize to mrs daulton who herself is african -american.before taseer benazeer was assasinated and before that a lady minister zil e huma .the fanatic in the last case said women working outside home was unislamic.he murdered her and could'nt have access to benazeer because of security whom he also wanted to finish.whatevever is happening is very unfortunate.may God help us.
