Canada, the latest Gallup poll shows:

Some of these answers seem a touch unfair to me. I would have preferred to see a poll asking Americans about their views of other countries' goverments, rather than the countries themselves. For instance, my guess is that most Americans have no problems with the Iranian people -- but take issue with the regime.

Another curious thing: The United States invaded Afghanistan nine years ago. Now, 18 of Americans view Afghanistan favorably, but 47 percent of Afghans view the United States favorably.

I won't be surprised if the Iranian Government uses these results to their advantage. You know, saying something like "Americans hate the Iranian people, so cooperation with them should be nonexistent."

Do they know where those countries are on the map

I remember an other poll, probably most Americans cannot even place the counties on a world map...

Australia & New Zealand not here?

What? Didn't the sponsors have enough survey cash for this?

wow

The most interesting thing to me about this is that 6 and 7 % of respondents have a totally unfavorable view of Canada and the UK, respectively. Why do you guys think that is? Maybe some more-Irish-than-the-actual-Irish types and perhaps immortals who fought for the colonials in the revolution on the UK, but Canada? Did a disproportionate number of respondents hold strong views on softwood lumber or something? Interested in others' theories.

my enemy's enemy

The 6 or 7 % who dislike Canada or UK are probably insignificant from a purely statistical point of view, you are surely going to get that many people who hate everybody, even Greenland (and why weren't they in the poll, I wonder).

DPRK

Most of these make sense, although I'd be interested in meeting the 14% of Americans that have a favorable opinion of North Korea.

I'm not surprised that we have really good view of the cousins (Great Britain and Canada), although I am surprised at how high the views of Germany and Japan are. It's a pity they didn't have some type of "what if the first thing you think when you hear about this country?" type of test.

"I remember an other poll, probably most Americans cannot even place the counties on a world map..."

Really Paul, "an other" poll showed that most yanks can't find "counties" on a map? Great contribution to the dialogue.

My god you're a dumbass, go back to Slate please.
