Every world leader, it seems, has that one member of the family he'd rather not see getting too much press. Jimmy Carter had Billy. Hamid Karzai has Ahmad Wali. Bill Clinton had Roger.

Behold, Miguel "El Negro" Piñera, the brother of Chile's new president:

I managed to get this iPhone shot of Miguel, a night-club owner, respected musician, and notorious party animal, at Sebastian Piñera's victory party Sunday in Santiago. Let's just say that, among the well-heeled crowd dressed in a seeming uniform of khaki pants and pastel-colored polo shirts, Miguel stood out. Here he is at an earlier event, enthusiastically receiving what is apparently some kind of traditional Chilean dessert:

The cake, a gift from his niece, reads: "Enjoy yourself." You can Google his wife, Argentine former model Belén Hidalgo if you wish -- but I suggest you do so on your own time.

UPDATE: Welcome, Chilean readers.  To clarify: This blog post is meant to be humorous, not a serious examination of Miguel Piñera or his role in politics. Please take it in that spirit.

a correction: he's not a respected musician. He had a minor hit in 1982, during Pinochet's dictatorship, when one of his brothers was in the cabinet and pretty much all artists were banned from TV or radio.

After that, he's been notorious only for being drunk and date blondes.

Feel sorry for the posted comments

Miguel Piñera is a well known figure of Santiago's bohemian life. He had a moment of success time ago as a musician, and as one of the owners, in the 80's, of a very sucsessful pub "El Gato Viudo" (The Widower Cat) a must visit place for young adults, at that time.
He was quite acceptable as apopular musician, clearly he was not a genius, but that is not a reason to scorn him.
Now he is older, not as popular, but he continues enjoing life. His sin, apparently, is to have sucess during Pinochet regime -just a fact of life, that was his moment. And also because he is the brother of the new president that happens to be representative of the center-right (another fact of life). He never have had a political role, but apparently get the contempt and hatred from the people who hates his brother (mainly left wing) because he is (1) rich (2) successful (3) Center-right leader.
"El Negro" is a very nice guy that does not hurt anyone, except perhaps that he may embarrass his brother because of his "style of life".

A respected musician?

I absolutely agree with Nicolas Rojas, Miguel Piñera is not a respected musician, as a matter of fact I'm a music producer in Chile, and I can confirm that M. Piñera is nothing but a drug abuser and dealer, not respected at all. He his not a musician, he plays the guitar and sing like a lot of people in Chile do. Not very talented, except when we talk about money, party and "stuff".
Mr. J_D, when you say that he is a very nice guy and that he doesn't hurt anyone, I can bet that you don't know him personally or that you are just blind about the facts.
I'm really sorry that the word "musician" is related to this character. I feel sorry for my fellows musicians and I'm really ashamed that people like this man are being part of the chilean news in foreign media.

Nobody is perfect but...

Well, in spite of what some people might say, it can't be said that thi sguy is a musician in the first place, he was just a bored, loaded kid (he did some "music" ages ago) with some instruments and the posibility of make a record album...anyways the fact that most people in Chile believe that he is a huge loser with luck has nothing to do with his brother but with himself, he is a shame to himself and his own family and now, thanx to this blog, he is a shame for our whole country...He is a nice guy...but be careful is he's driving his car to close to yours after midnight...that can be very scary.

Miguel Pinera

He is not only a party animal and a shame for his family, he is also connected to drug cartels and drug dealing at very high levels in Chile... so that is something to keep into account

Miguel Pinera connection to drug cartels

I would suggest GROWUPMAN to refrain from comments he/she is not aware of. It is understandable that a night-club owner be close to drug consumption but another thing is to link him with " drug cartels and drug dealing at very high levels" On the other hand, as far as Chileans know, he is not precisely a shame for his family, he is only different. So, please, be less poisonous with your comments.

Further information on Miguel "Negro" Piñera

As for respected musician, well that is a stretch. As a nightclub owner, the funds he needed and needs to live come from his brother Sebastian, the President-elect. Miguel is indeed a party animal with a trademark catch phrase "papurri" something like "daddio". "Negro" is bipolar, as the president-elect is anxious, hyperactive, full of body ticks. Negro's partner Belen is the typical Argentine cabaret girl, she left him last year due to mounting jealousy bouts. "Negro" was extremely jealous of a younger -Belen's age- personal physical trainer who worked Belen out at an upscale gym. After many months and therapy Belen took his much older lover back, 20 year difference. Ask youself why a cabaret girl would end up with a man 20 years her senior. According to Piñera family lore, before the mother died, she may have told Sebastian to take care of Miguel because he cannot take care of himself. Now check for Jose Piñera at the Cato institute with his rants against his brother who climbed higher than him. Brother Jose Piñera was a Pinochet lackey who imposed the current and yet to be reformed labour legislation and the failed private independent pension plan. A plan that is bearing its first fruits, people with 30-40 years of funds in the private system retired with a pension of about 160 to 180 thousand pesos. That translate to 320-350 US$. That fact forced the outgoing Bachelet government to implement a pension reform that augments pensions, extends pensions to those left out from the Jose Piñera created system. The Piñera´s an odd quirky family. Their is much, much more information on the Piñeras.

I apologize

Apparently coming from Chileans , as I guess from the rather weak English, it is awkward to read comments of bloggers that insist on highlighting only negative aspects of the President-elect's brother Miguel. I am a proud Chilean, and it hurts to learn that we have people capable of impairing the reputation of a fellow citizen in the international press. What Mr. Piñera does or leaves out is his business, as long as he is not harming anybody, and therefore he deserves respect. I believe most of the bloggers are not acquainted to the Piñera family, so that it seems unfair to criticize what is barely known.

Oh Rolf....Rolf....Rolf...

Don't apologize for the English of others, don't apologize because people opine on "Negro" Piñera and his brother the President-elect. Just make sure your English is up to standard. Each one of us is free to write the best way we know how in English, Spanish, or German. Make sure that your adjectives are correct and not taken from the Spanish to make your point of view because it is lost in translation. Finally, if people want to comment on any subject, as far as I know, freedom of speech is a Constitutionally guaranteed right in Chile's Constitution, that right extends to blogs in Chile and elsewhere. Saludos Rolf!!!

embarrassing

It's so embarrassing to think that Chile might be known for this kind of people. He's not a respected musician, he doesn't belong to our bohemian culture... He just belongs to that kind of man who acts and lives like a pimp. We, the young and slightly smart people, do not party like he does, do not share his values , do not go and hang out to the kind of clubs that he owns... In fact we despise them! We are so much smarter and cooler than this!

This is not hypster, please people don't believe anything that is written in this article, let's not glamorize this!

Respect what?

El Negro Piñera is sort of a joke. He is not a popular neither a respect musician. He had one hit 30 years ago. Not a piece of art, by the way.

He has then live being gross and vulgar at the shadow of his brother.

Managing his pubs, which a lot of time had been accuessed of selling drugs.
I can only expected tthat he will be "raised" again as "respect musician" as he was during Pinochet.

Depressing.

negro piñera

I think that you have to be reported before write about this:

1. Negro Piñera is not respected musician

2. Sebastián Piñera is not a "world leader", he's just a very very rich man that verifies that money really really CAN BUY ALL, even a country.

It's a shame

El Negro's reputation is as black as his name.

Just to make a couple of things clear to your readers.

This man has never been known for being a "musician". That is a name given to someone who possesses some kind of talent. He doesn't, at least at a musical level.

He has only been known for his scandals, and for being the brother of the man who owns half of my beautiful country.

And finally, although I'm sure many people would love this "dessert" to be part of our traditional cuisine...well, it just isn't.

You can't say he is "receiving what is apparently some kind of traditional Chilean dessert"! Its insulting and shows lack of research. There is not such dessert here in Chile, that's just a joke from some bloke. It says "Enjoy it", by the way.

Who representes Negro Piñera

To add to what has been said, as Chilean I can tell you, (sorry for my English) the "black Pinera" is known only as a pathetic character, who takes off his beret not eve to get a shower, and who call himselve a musician, artist and bohemian which is far far away. Please not insult the realy musicians, artists and bohemians who usually are associated with an intellectual endeavor, a concept totally absent from the brain of this man.
But the problem with all of this is not the "black", is in fact the hypocrisy of the adherents of Sebastian Pinera, who apologize and lower the profile as if he were a child, despite them being very Catholic, a lot of them belonging to Opus Day, who have been historically the most strict in terms of "moral values", but this lets see once again that it is only when it suits them ...

hell yeah thats our traditional Chilean desert!!!
this is a funny article... whats not funny is that he is the brother of our next president, not because of Negro Pinera, he would be a cool brother, but because of our next president...
