Warning: spoilers to follow.
This weekend, against my wife's better judgment, we went to see 2012, and it was everything its fans and critics said it would be: grandiose in ambition, ludicrous in conception, and technically wondrous in execution.
There are obviously a lot of silly things going on in the movie, not least the idea that you could keep such a thing as the imminent destruction of the planet secret from all but a handful of people, even while you are auctioning off golden parachutes. A fatal flaw of the film that as far as I know has gone unremarked upon, however, is its strange conception of global governance.
For one thing, it's ridiculous to think that the moribund G-8 would be the preferred international forum in which to hash out doomsday planning. And yet, we get Danny Glover as the U.S. president, leaning on his thoughtful Russian and Italian colleagues to help plan for the end of the world. China, though it builds and hosts the giant, arc-like ships that are supposed to save the chosen few from disaster, isn't a G-8 member and therefore this particular nuclear-armed fifth of humanity doesn't appear to get a seat at the big-boys' table.
Then there's India. Despite the fact that an Indian scientist nobly informs his American colleague of his (admittedly far-fetched) findings about how the sun's surging neutrinos are destabilizing the Earth's core, rather than keeping the knowledge to himself, nobody comes to rescue the poor bastard and his family when the meltdown begins. Instead, we are treated to a painful scene of him about to be swamped by a 50-foot tsunami, resignedly informing Washington's top geologist of his plight and the flood's unexpectedly rapid advance, before the line goes dead. And again, since India is not a G-8 member, his compatriots, representing another fifth or so of the Earth's population, don't seem to be on any of the arcs or involved in the discussions about their use.
So, suspending disbelief about the film's premise, here's a question for everyone: What is the proper forum for secret doomsday planning? The G-20? The U.N. Security Council? The P5+1 or the EU3+3? Every country for itself? Mssrs. Drezner and Walt, I'm counting on you to chime in here.
UPDATE: Drezner obliges! Go read.
So the goal is to plan for the preservation of the human race and instead of the People's Republic of China* or the Republic of India our priority is to consult with the Italian Republic. Wow, my nonexistent respect for this cinematic wreck actually went even further down.
It isn't as though those two have almost half the population of the world between them, the resources (as mentioned to do something about it), nuclear weapons (not to be an alarmist but when the world ends I would like to know what's going to happen to them), and a fair share geopolitical power to get things done. No offense meant to Italy and the Italians, but currently Italy doesn't play a leading role in international affairs, be patient and wait fifty years for geopolitics to completely change again.
SPOILERS; I think Italy is only in there to make way for the pope etc part of of the story. (The Italian prime minister, who would rather pray than flee. Vatican collapsing etc) . And btw, Italy is the 10th largest economy so it is not like they don't count.
As for the only G8 are getting saved stuff, in the movie it is clearly stated that 88 countries or something is on board for the arch-plan.. Only 4 (later 3) arcs were usable in time though.
Mayan prophecy, new "earth age"...be ready..
The mayans obviously KNEW something..its the "Galactic Alignment" and a new "earth age"..every 5,200 yrs this happens, and when it does, be prepared. Don't know wat exactly to expect, but i expect the worst. Solar flairs, the shifting of the magnetic poles..catastrophe. So, stock up on water and food, there is safety in numbers, especialy if ur ARMED. Thats right, ya gotta protect urself, ur fam, coz there won't be ANY cops..they are only crims with badges anyway. I have been stocking water, MRE's, canned food, dried fruit, and have been digging in my basement. Water purifiers, medicines, NVG's, bino's, and a whole lotta ammo. Extra mags, duct tape, gas masks, you name it, we got it. Having just hunting rifles ain't enough..mil-spec AR's, a couple AK's, shotguns, plenty of pistols and ammo..my fave is the Bshmstr 6.8, and the SOCOM version of the M-14, its tricked out with an ACOG, foregrip, and a nice copy of the Galil, SAR. Don't come knockin on my door...
yeah, i know..i look at you everymorning and i can see it..now pass that bottle of bourbon down the table, along with those little white pills..damn they make me feel gooooood!! i KNOW iam not crazy...LOL!!!!
yeah, im a couple sandwiches short of a picnic..
i know im a little "touched"..nothing at all may happen. but ya never know, better safe than sorry..you will find me this march in angeles city, phillipines, gettin my rocks off b-4 the whole sh*thouse goes up in flames..ya only live once, and im gona get my kicks..yowzahhhhh!!!!
