A Canadian immigration court has granted refugee status to South African citizen Brandon Huntley, saying that he faces persecution as a white man in his home country:

Huntley, 31, "would stand out like a 'sore thumb' due to his colour in any part of the country", the board's panel chair, William Davis, said in his decision.

Huntley, who grew up in Mowbray, said he had been attacked seven times and stabbed four times "by African South Africans" between 1991 and 2003.

Davis found he "was a victim because of his race rather than a victim of criminality".

The South African goverment is peeved that it wasn't even allowed to testify in the case, particularly since none of the attacks on Huntley were ever reported to the police. "Canada's reasoning for granting Huntley a refugee status can only serve to perpetuate racism," said an African National Congress statement.

The "sore thumb" remark is particularly ripe for mockery, as evidence by this Onion-esque piece reporting the tribunal's shock that Hartley "wasn't the last white in South Africa" and warning Canada to "expect a deluge of young, unemployable, white South Africans."

Hartley's case, argued by a South African immigrant who had been looking for a test-case for years, does seem a little dodgy. And all the more so since the country's "white flight" and its high crime rate are real issues that deserve more serious discussion.

Some facts

A clearly legitimate refugee claim finally comes before our immigration board, and what follows? Groundless accusations of dubious dealing and exaggeration on the part of Huntley and his lawyer -- presumably in order to avoid a clear violation of the immutable commandments of the politically correct. Evidently it is sheer blasphemy for some people to admit the fact that white Western men are not the only people in this world who are capable of racist persecution. Is it really necessary for me to point out that had the racial roles been reversed, a tidal wave of support, rather than mockery and insinuations of deception, would be the order of the day? The fact is that racially motivated violence against white men and women is common in South Africa; and Huntley, as the immigration board noted, presented "clear and convincing proof of the state's inability or unwillingness to protect him" (Ottawa Sun).

Here is an excerpt from the Ottawa Sun article on the story, which should help undo the deplorable insinuations in this blog post:

'Growing up in Mowbray, a town near Cape Town, Huntley was attacked seven times — including three stabbings — by black South Africans during attempted robberies and muggings.

During these attacks [...] he was called “a white dog” and “a settler,” a reference to South Africa’s colonial past based on racial apartheid.

“If you have got the money, you can protect yourself,” Huntley said of the armed security guards wealthy white South Africans hire to protect themselves.

Huntley’s “subjective fear of persecution remained constant and consistent” up to the time he made his refugee claim, Davis noted in his decision on Huntley’s claim.

The decision also took into account testimony by Laura Kaplan, 41, the sister of Huntley’s lawyer, who immigrated to Canada last year from her native South Africa.

Laura Kaplan testified about being threatened by armed black South Africans and the torture of her brother Robert in 1997 when a gang of black men broke into his house, tortured him for eight hours, shot him three times and left him for dead.

Davis said the evidence of Huntley and Laura Kaplan “show a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness” of the South African government to protect “White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans.”'

Huntley

This is a real catch 22 for SA. either they admit to racism or they admit that crime is equally dished out which is so bad that Canada feels he does need to flee for his life. Also there will generally not be police reports 1. It takes so long while you show them how to spell, you sometimes just write it up yourself 2.why bother they criminal will never get caught or incarcerated 3. we only make police reports for insurance claim purposes. visit http://do-i-qualify-as-a-refugee.over-blog.com/. just started today so look in a weeks time

FINALLY.!.!

At last there is proper attention being given to victimization of white people.

We are the CURRENTLY DISADVANTAGED people of South Africa. BEE has made sure of that.

We are a MINORITY GROUP that is discriminated against.

Police seem to respond when they feel like it. I called them to report three black men trying to break in at my front door. They simply never arrived. So it is quite clear why someone would flee to another country.

The ANC has been squealing racism for so long that it has encouraged the young black people of South Africa to become hateful toward white people. Isn't it getting a little old?

I am so glad someone has stood up and taken a visible stand against the persecution of white people!
