"We're going to buy several battalions of Russian tanks," Chavez said at a news conference, saying the deal is among accords he hopes to conclude during a visit to Russia in September.
Chavez's government has already bought more than $4 billion worth of Russian arms since 2005, including helicopters, fighter jets and Kalashnikov assault rifles.
The socialist leader called Colombia's plan to host more U.S. soldiers a "hostile act" and a "true threat" to Venezuela and its leftist allies. He warned that a possible U.S. buildup could lead to the "start of a war in South America," but gave no indication that Venezuela's military is mobilizing in preparation for any conflict.
Chavez's old friend Fidel Castro also chimed in, writing that, "Venezuela isn't arming itself against the sister nation of Colombia, it's arming itself against the (U.S.) empire."
I doubt it. No matter how big his ego, I doubt that Chavez believes he has a chance against the U.S. military in a conventional war, no matter how many tanks he buys. Even if Venezuela increased its current tank force by 20 times, it would still have fewer than Iraq did before the first Gulf War. Bringing a bigger knife to a gunfight doesn't really shift the odds in your favor.
The rising tensions do give Chavez political cover for a military buildup during a time of economic stagnation and an opportunity to prepare in case of a confrontation with enemies closer to home.

He isn't arming himself against Colombia. Tanks in a jungle? Worthless.
Rather this is giving him a good chance to try to buy of the army with some shiny toys, and if there ever are some mass disturbances in the streets, tanks are nice and impressive against rioters.
He need to keep his generals happy. As long as they can dress up and march around with their toys, Chavez can keep them quiet that much longer.
Conversely, for what does the U.S. need bases in Colombia? To swat the mosquitos? How naive you are. And how condescending to Venezuela's military. If you want to deal at that level and are honest, there's no military like the U.S. military when it comes to needing more toys to play with.
This is a dangerous situation that diplomacy could easily have set right. Instead, it's a prelude to yet further U.S. imperialism in Latin America. A great shame for our great nation.
The US military has bases in Colombia for anti-drug operations, and yes, to maintain regional influence.
But they don't use tanks, they use helicopters, airplanes, and special forces, all of which one can actually deploy in a jungle.
Tanks really have no use in a jungle. That's common sense
he wants attention...just like Bush´s war on terror
He wants attention, votes, take advantage of people´s fears, popularity. Just like good old W Bush with his "war on terror". Neocons are so close to chavists.
The real question is: what does the US government want doing that besides spending loads of money in something that would not give any specific advantage, and has a political cost?
Venezuela isn't all jungle, It has plains, Savannas. Where the capital and most important cities are located. Also, the border with Colombia has plains as well. Thats why Venezuela has tanks, They're not stupid. The reason Colombia has helicopters instead of tanks, is because Colombia has many mountains and high lands, where a tank would be useless.
