Missing the point on the Pope

Atlantic blogger and soon-to-be New York Times columnist Ross Douthat was not happy at all that my colleague David Rothkopf put Pope Benedict on his list of the world's biggest losers because of his comments on AIDS and condoms:
There are many other NGOs working in Africa that proceed from different premises, and take a different attitude toward matters sexual as a result, and if David Rothkopf prefers their approach that's perfectly understandable. But unless he's willing to tell the Catholic Church that it should fold up its charitable operations in the developing world and go home, I'd prefer to be spared the lectures on how the Pope is responsible for "massive death and suffering" among populations for whom Catholic institutions have provided lifelines beyond counting over the years, just because he isn't willing to to use his pulpit to preach the importance of playing it as safe as possible, health-wise, while you're committing what the Church considers mortal sin.
Rothkopf is more than able to defend his own posts, but I think that Douthat is missing the real reason why the Pope's comments upset so many people. As Bill Easterly pointed out, the first part of the Pope's statement, that AIDS is "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms," is a perfectly legitimate statement. Condoms alone won't solve anything. It's his next clause, that the distribution of condoms "even aggravates the problem" which is more problematic.
Here's more Easterly:
From the standpoint of the individual, this is obvious nonsense, you are much less likely to get AIDS if you use a condom. The reason that mass condom distribution has not worked is that far too many people don’t use the condoms. One among the many possible reasons that people don’t use condoms is that religious leaders like the Pope tell them not to, or they believe unscientific statements like the Pope’s that “condoms aggravate the problem.” So it is tragically circular for the Pope to condemn the condom campaigns for not working, when one reason they don’t work is that the Pope has previously condemned condoms.
So in response to Douthat, the Pope was not "proceeding from a different premise" than those who promote condom use, he was making a statement that could at the very least be interpreted as arguing against the fact that condoms use can prevent the transmission of AIDS. Until condom proponents start telling people that they're obligated to have sex, the Pope's defenders are on shaky ground when they say he's just offering another approach.
But don't take my word for it. Roseli Tardelli, a Brazilian AIDS activist who's been educating people on these issues for over a decade, has a new piece on The Argument blog, about how the Pope's words have set her work back years.

Papal Sophistry
Claims that sexual abstinence or fidelity reduce the spread of AIDS/HIV doesn’t imply that condoms increase it. So powerful is his desire for sex without condoms, the Pontiff is prepared to propagate porkies in the face of an indisputable fact – compared to au naturale, sex with condoms decreases the risk of infection.
The Pope exerts enormous influence in the largely illiterate population of Sub-Saharan Africa – his lie will spread confusion, misery and death.
"I am a liberal on social
"I am a liberal on social issues and it’s difficult to admit, but the Pope is indeed right. The best evidence we have shows that condoms do not work as an intervention intended to reduce HIV infection rates, in Africa." - Dr. Edward Green, Director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard School of Public Health and Center for Population and Development Studies.

Flying Pigs
Yeahman, what if Dr Edward Green (add prestigious institute and various letters of the alphabet in prestigious permutations after his name)said "Pigs Fly". And the Pope agreed with him!
This wouldn't make the statement true. Because it is so out of whack with commonsense - The good Doctor and Pope would have to present compelling statistical evidence. And I don't mean self-serving research - they'd have to show a common finding in lotsa independant research.
Doctors can tell porkies, just like Popes. (It's a human trait!)
I don't think that I buy into
I don't think that I buy into the arguement that, because the pope says 'don't use condoms', some people do. If they were listening to the pope, they wouldn't be having non-marital sex in the first place.
I see the point though, that the pope's statement could be misinterpreted by some people to mean that you're more likely to get aids when using a condom, or that people could think about the pope's statement when not using a condom and feel justified, if wrongly. But still, who amoung the people condom giveaways are targeting are even aware of the pope's statements, or who thinks about what the pope says about condoms, and then goes ahead and has unprotected sex /anyway/? Seems like anyone who gives the pope's statements any creedence should still be more concerned about having non-marital sex anyway.
The Pope is an intolerant liar who behaves illogically.
Maybe the pope should not be the enormous moral authority across the global culture that he is. The pope believes that a myth about the existence of a good one in Heaven at war with an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth is; the truth about the existence of one totality that we all share. To claim that myth is truth as he does is to lie to the many of our global culture. The truth is that myth is myth. The lie is that myth is truth. Belief in the truth that myth is myth leads to tolerance of those who choose a different myth than our own when orienting self towards world and explaining world to self. Belief in the lie that myth is truth lead to intolerance of those who choose a different myth than our own when orienting self towards world and explaining world to self. From intolerance follows a global war on terror. The aggressive ideological tradition he leads produces religious leaders who repeat the lie that myth is truth in defense of a fraudulent affirmation of an ability to know about the existence of a good one in Heaven at war with an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth; in defense of their threat making against the life and or afterlife of anybody that does not submit to their authority; in defense of their extortion of tithes and offerings from communities of faithful believers in exchange for a life long indoctrination in the lie that myth is truth; and in defense of the racist, heterofascist, warmongering behavior of communities of faithful believers they motivate to out work, out fight, and out number competition in a race to Armageddon. The pope continues to be the enormous moral authority across the global culture because a mercenary plutocratic predatory few who profit from the sale and manufacture of the products and services of a beast of a military industrial complex are smart enough to know that he is good for their protection racket a.k.a. the global world on terror. Of course, the pope is not the only intolerant liar who behaves illogically. The global culture is dominated by networks of liars built up around a belief in the lie that myth about the existence of a good one in Heaven at war with an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth is: the truth about the existence of one totality that we all share.
Maybe those who vigorously defend their faith in an aggressive ideological tradition don't understand the ordeal we are facing together. Human beings are multiplying to the point of causing disease within the body that is our body consuming biosphere. Global warming, deforestation, desertification, pollution, desolation of large areas of land in war; dead zones in our oceans, and the melting of ancient glaciers are all evidence of this disease as is the daily starvation of on average thirty thousand children aged zero to five. Our historical use of violence to resolve our differences over ownership of increasingly scarce resources; and to resolve our differences over matters of faith; could cause the death of the body that is our body consuming biosphere.
If I get a virus in my body that multiplies to excess and causes disease, then maybe I can take an anti-viral to inhibit the multiplication of the virus and restore my body to health. If our body consuming biosphere gets a liar in it's body that multiplies to excess and causes disease, then maybe our body consuming biosphere can take an anti-liar to inhibit the multiplication of liars and restore it's body to health. Maybe the truth is the only anti-liar that our body consuming biosphere needs to take. The truth is that myth is myth. Based on the truth that myth is myth, I challenge religious leaders who repeat the lie that myth is truth in defense of their fraud, threat making, and extortion. Extortion based on fraud that follows from the lie that myth is truth should be considered a crime against humanity, because in committing acts of extortion based on fraud that follows from the lie that myth is truth these conservative ideological authorities make threats against the life and or afterlife of others; and lead communities of faithful believers to have a low esteem of the existence of one totality that is not conducive to happiness and health.
Abrahamic Religions are Satanic Religions. Communities of faithful believers self organized around Abrahamic religions may claim to be worshiping a good one in Heaven yet this good one in Heaven is not even good enough to rule over the Earth in the present. In their minds, communities of faithful believers self organized around Abrahamic religions give over rule of the Earth in the present to an evil one cast down from Heaven that they call Satan. Sure some communities of faithful believers self organized around Abrahamic religions may claim that a good one in Heaven will return to Earth in the future to have final victory over an evil one cast down from Heaven and ruling over Earth in the present; but they never back up this claim with one definite conclusion about a specific point in time when this final victory will occur. We always live in the present, and our lives in the future are always in the future. So for all intents and purposes Abrahamic religions lead communities of faithful believers to build a pessimistic model of the existence of one totality that follows from the idea that an evil one cast down from Heaven rules over Earth. The claim that Satan is ruling over Earth, and the claim that the evil one attacks the minds and bodies of the many; may lead some communities of faithful believers to think, believe and expect that an evil one cast down from Heaven has the power to influence the thoughts and actions of members: This in turn leads some of those members to fear their own bodies and their own minds.
We need to stop lying to ourselves, stop lying to one another, start telling the truth and start behaving in a logical manner. If the truth is that myth is myth, and optimism correlates with happiness and health, then out of an infinite number, diversity, and variety of myths about the existence of one totality made possible by the existence of discovery and the existence of mystery; the logical choice to make when orienting self towards the world and explaining the world to self is a belief in the one myth that enables us to have the highest esteem of the existence of one totality. The validity of this choice follows from the truth that myth is myth and from the capacity of a belief in the one myth that enables us to have the highest esteem of the existence of one totality to produce desirable results that are conducive to happiness and health. A belief in a pessimistic myth about the existence of one totality is an illogical choice to make when orienting self towards the world and explaining the world to self. The invalidity of this choice follows from the lie that myth is truth and from the capacity of a belief in a pessimistic myth about the existence of one totality to produce undesirable results that are not conducive to happiness and health.

Now the analysis.
In 1995, sexually experienced teenage men ages 15-17 had a sexual activity rate of 33%. In 1995 the 18 and 19 year-old men who were sexually experienced had a sexual activity rate of 58%. Then the barriers to condom use were lowered. Perhaps co-incidentally, the rates of sexual activity among sexually experienced teenagers rose to 120% or 125% of the pre-intervention levels.
The only group that benefited from the lowered barriers was married women and men, who used condoms more, but that may have been because the proportion of married men with MULTIPLE PARTNERS increased among some age groups.
Now the conclusion.
The pope was not only telling the truth about what he believed, he was right.
