Petraeus's coin toss
Mon, 02/02/2009 - 10:53am
In case you missed the game last night, Gen. David Petraeus's coin toss was a great bit of theater, and very much in keeping with the Super Bowl's overall last days of the Roman Empire vibe.
As one guest at the party I attended observed, it must be nice for him to be involved in a conflict where you know one side is eventually going to win.

Oh the drama
I wonder if by having one of the most recognizable and loved U.S. General present during the Super Bowl was thought to favourably impact the Army Brand. What do you think? Am I missing something? Bet I am.

Total cheese.
And, an abuse of taxpayer dollars. I don't want to see a general on prime time TV, especially doing the job a referee should be doing. He's a public servant, not a judge.

First off, you do realize a judge is a public servant too, right?
Also, I have no problem with a man who works on average 16 to 18 hours a day taking some time for himself on a Sunday to take in the big game. It's not like he's charging overtime to go to the Super Bowl, and he already lives in Tampa as the commander of CENTCOM. So the only tax payer money that went in to this event was likely spent in driving him across town to the game and then back to base.
Nor do I have a problem with the NFL honoring Gen Petraeus and by extension, the U.S. military writ large.
As a U.S. veteran, I'm proud to have served with men like Gen Petraeus and though I don't feel that I need to be thanked, its nice when the appreciation shows up in unexpected places.
