The rise of the non-contiguous two

Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are both historic candidates for obvious reasons, but it also seems significant that this election now features both a Hawaiian and an Alaskan. The two far-flung Pacific states will both celebrate their 50th anniversaries next year.

This is going to take some getting used to for the rest of us.
