Georgia, is it important?

It all began when Georgia, a former Soviet republic tried to control the independent movements of the territory of South Ossetia and caused a Russian response. The South Ossetia, as well as the territories of Abkázia who want the separation of Georgia and therefore has been pro Russians. There are peace-keeping forces of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) in that area for several years, however, most are russsas forces, for obvious reasons, proximity and capacity of sending troops. The influence of Russia has long been evident, Georgia was a Soviet republic and belongs to the Community of Independent States created by Boris Yeltsin, has a strong historical identity, social and cultural with the "Mother Russia." Georgia is also a country with natural resources and is completely within the immediate sphere of influence of Russia. When it declared independence started to depart from Russia and want to become closer to the European Union and its values, be embedded in a geographically half walls with Russia does not help. The Russian population in Georgia is a minority, but there is, being more visible in the territories of Ossetia and Abkázia. By wanting to control the separatist movements in Georgia triggered a Russian attack quickly and effectively with the reason the defence of their compatriots and their interests. What are those interests? Certainly the removal of several neighbouring countries from Russia to Western sphere of influence, looking into the European Union, NATO and so on. But no one doubts the Russian military might, more, Russia is an emerging countries, along with Brazil, India and China, the group called BRIC. In this sense, it was necessary for the Russians a call for the entire international community that they will not hesitate to defend their interests. However, this has a drawback, to demonstrate that force it could lead to even more, many other countries of the East will increasingly want to take steps to join the European Union and Nato and to align themselves with the United States. If on the one hand the U.S. response was relatively decided in the words, the European Union has left much to be desired. This shows that to Europe and the United States there are not sufficient reasons to help more than words and gestures Georgia. The U.S. live in a period of elections, the U.S. administration has other problems to worry about and would not take measures in order to mandate. As regards the European Union, it does not have the means to confront the giant Russian, holder of energy resources critical to the Union. Finally Russia is fundamental in the political chess world, and necessary for successful resolution of the Iranian issue. The Russia will be in Georgia the time that find it necessary. Russia will decide when to exit, and when it does is because of taking advantage on other issues. So everything comes down in international politics to this: we have pity, but it can not be done, the interest is what counts. Pereira da Costa

Russian military

But no one doubts the Russian military might

Against Georgia, perhaps.

The Russian military is a ghost of its former Soviet self. Its conventional forces are no match for US and NATO forces in numbers, training or technology (assuming Afghan and Iraq forces are redeployed). Russia's nuclear arsenal, however antiquated, is a large deterrant and factor in the balance of power.
