Weekend open thread
Fri, 05/16/2008 - 6:07pm
Have a great weekend everyone. Here's an open-thread question for you: In light of this week's uproar over Bush's Knesset speech, will Barack Obama's stated willingness to negotiate with hostile regimes be an electoral liability, or an advantage?

Isn't there
a clown screen on the comments section? LoLacaust obviously slipped through the net.
Obama has nothing to lose by saying he will talk with Hamas or anyone else. The notion that open discussions are somehow equivalent to appeasement is a position one usually only finds in middle school playgrounds....which seems to be the inspiration for the Bush-Cheney-McCain junta.
Well,
The problem is that that's assuming that campaign issues, especially American campaign issues, have anything to do with reasonable assertions. "So and so" is soft on communism, anyone?
All it takes is for it to get picked up at the right spot of the news cycle, and we'll remember it for some time to come. I mean, look at 'bittergate'.
The Democrat primary contest has gone on for way too long, allowing the Republicans to just enter campaign mode already. Bush's comment is just par for the course; Republicans have always been better at framing the political discourse in their terms. McCain's had a good while to get his act together while Hillary and Obama are still shooting it out, slowly ruining each other's reputations. They should really get it resolved asap or else I have a bad feeling that come November we'll see another Republican term in office.
It was a pretty
It was a pretty loosely-stated commitment that he could easily get out of and I think both sides know this despite the hyperbole. Hamas will make a poor enough negotiating partner that starting and then quickly ending negotiations will not look that bad.
Also, LOLacaust's comment above was in very poor taste and should be removed.
Weekend briefs
Here are my open thread questions:
* Where have the weekend open threads gone, lately?
* Is it that much trouble to auto-post a weekend open thread post?
* Plenty of geopolitically-relevant events happen over the weekend. What about figuring out some way to create weekend briefs?
