GAZA CITY—Thousands of supporters of the ruling Hamas party attend a rally in Gaza City on 15 December 2006 to listen to an address by Palestinian Prime Minister and the leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniya, who returned to the Gaza Strip last night following a trip to Arab countries and Iran. The ruling Palestinian Hamas movement accused its Fatah rivals today of trying to assassinate Haniya as the dueling factions clashed in the West Bank. Tensions escalated after a late-night attack on Haniya's convoy at the Rafah border crossing in the Gaza Strip left one of the Hamas leader's bodyguards dead and his son injured.
