- I'm just finishing Rian Malan's classic memoir of apartheid South Africa, My Traitor’s Heart. In the October 14 issue of the UK's Spectator, Malan weighs in on Jacob Zuma's political future and what it means for South Africa in Not Civil War, But Sad Decay.

- Parliament of Man, By Paul Kennedy
- Law and Terror, By Kenneth Anderson, Policy Review (Oct/Nov 2006)

- Over the weekend, I devoured the companion website for PBS Nova's 2004 documentary "Life and Death in the War Zone," which was reaired last week. Particularly interesting are the personnel profiles of four key figures from the doc. Their personal accounts of life in the CASH (combat support hospital), reveal the evolution of the war from late 2003 to early 2004 from a medic's point of view.
