Michael Standaert at the Huffington Post noticed that Taiwan was missing on the map that accompanied the Failed States Index:

Where did Taiwan go? What black geopolitical memory hole did it slip into? Was it just a mental lapse from those who compiled the map, or something more ominous? I've written to FP about this, but haven't yet heard why they left Taiwan out. If it was a legitimate mistake, then so be it. But considering Hainan is there, it looks a bit fishy.

Well, there's nothing fishy about it. Our dedicated design team has no beef with Taipei. It was just an inadvertent oversight. (FP staffers, if you can't tell from the blog posts, tend to love freedom.) Though Taiwan was not included in the Index, it should have appeared on the map. We regret the error and have corrected the map that now appears on the Web.
