Morocco preachers 50 women have just been named Muslim preachers in Morocco. For quite a while, and particularly so after the May 2003 suicide bombings in Casablanca, the king of Morocco has been trying to steer Moroccan Islam towards moderation, especially through the empowerment of women. German weekly Der Spiegel had an in-depth piece analyzing this "quiet revolution" in January which is worth reading today. Perhaps someone better versed on this issue than I am would like to compare how the empowerment of women in Islamic societies working through religion will fare (as in Morocco) against that achieved by the forced secularization of institutions (as in Turkey).
