Rachel Ray, terrorist sympathizer?

Wed, 05/28/2008 - 11:01am

Poor Rachel Ray. The Food Network hostess unwittingly unleashed the fury of blogger Michelle Malkin last Friday when she wore a black-and-white, paisley scarf in an ad for Dunkin Donuts. Upon learning of the ad, Malkin called Ray "clueless" and upbraided her for wearing "jihadi chic":

Charles Johnson notes, and many readers have e-mailed about, Dunkin Donuts' spokeswoman Rachel Ray's clueless sporting of a jihadi chic keffiyeh in a recent DD ad campaign. I'm hoping her hate couture choice was spurred more by ignorance than ideology.

Feeling the blogospheric heat, Dunkin Donuts decided to pull the ad even though, as you can clearly see, the scarf is not a checked keffiyeh at all:

Malkin, however, remains unhumbled by her mistake and still demands to know where Ray got her paisley scarf.

(For what it's worth, the keffiyeh is a secular symbol of Palestinian nationalism, though the Palestinian movement has obviously become more Islamist in recent decades. Just because you wear it doesn't mean you espouse violence, only that you take the Palestinian side in the conflict.)

Nice scarf

I do wish that Rachel would say where she got the scarf, and that a ton of women would go out and buy one rather than just laugh at Michelle Malkin's bizarre attack. I would like to buy one for Michelle, but she shouldn't let me be the one to put it around her neck because I might get carried away like she did.

Hopefully women are smarter

Hopefully women are smarter than that.

Nice to see grandpaw can control his animal urges. Oh wait, no he can't. How sad that hatred and threats are acceptable for the left, but pointing that out is unacceptable for the right.

And don't dare point out that the left supports Terrorism both in deed and fashion, then you will be choked by grandpaw and his HuffPo/DailyKos/DNC buddies.

Need I say more.

Thanks for the laugh, Mark.

While a person needs an interpreter to know what the devil you are trying to say in your posts, Mark, they nonetheless do have some entertainment value. And I'm sorry to see that your supply of tranquilizers has run out.

By the way, you can see some nice photos of Meghan McCain waring a real keffiyeh at http://gawker.com/5003288/mccain-daughter-dons-islamic-terror-scarf

The accompanying text:

"An email tipster discovered John McCain's family blog has been infiltrated at the deepest level by enemies of America. Meghan McCain, daughter of the Republican presidential candidate, is really into the keffiyeh, scarf of Middle Eastern Precious Freedoms Haters, and even wears it on the so-called Straight Talk Express, and also in the presence of her apparent sympathizer mom Cindy McCain! Republicans of course will murder McCain for this horrifying development, because they are fashion whores who know the keffiyeh is so over. Two more shots of Meghan "Mullah" McCain after the jump."

It seems clear that fanatic Republicans like Mark will not want to vote for a man who lets his daughter wear a keffiyeh.

Holy Crap.. Its Over

Game over, common sense has lost.
I think the blog at blog.charlescronn.com says it best. Hella funny!

Whaaa???

Isn't this the same thing that if it were a "liberal" group calling for something to be "fixed" the conservatives would be screaming back telling the liberals to not be so sensitive? C'mon, it is Rachel Ray!!! I know she is somewhat annoying but please let not give her too much credit and think she would have any sense to make a political statement.

What does wearing something that is worn among a population where a small percentage of the population does horrible things make the person wearing sympathize with the population's vilest people? I am a white American male. If I like to wear my ball cap sideways because I thought someone looked "hip" when they wore it, would it make me sympathize with all things bad it may (or not) symbolized? Let's ground ourselves here.

how do you people find this blog?

Hey, bgkeen how about you and I walk around Skokie or Berlin with a Swastika on our leather jackets and salute Hitler? C'mon, we're just good ol' commentators on a "intellectual" blog; it's nothing! It's just a symbol adopted by a few who are evil; it doesn't mean anything.

Oh how about we go down to South Central (L.A.) and wear a Red Scarf? maybe you are a Blue scarf? How about we carry around a Noose? C'mon you are just white guy who means no harm! It's a fashion statement.

What is sad is that so many are so clueless about so much.

Why is it that DD is portrayed as only doing this because of the "blogospheric heat?" Maybe they -- unlike some -- don't want to support Terrorism? No, can't be. That would be Patriotic, can't be that. Even though DD is a very pro-American company, clearly it's the "heat".

Mark, There is a big

Mark,

There is a big difference between wearing a swastika and saluting hitler than there is wearing a scarf that is similar to another piece of clothing that offends the "selectively offended." If I am wrong there, please let me know.

Michelle Malkin needs to get

Michelle Malkin needs to get a life. So what RR wore a certain type of scarf. Yeah maybe it looked like something a terrorists would wear who knows.Maybe RR should have wore something else. Everyday people wear something offfensive to someone. Michelle Malkin needs to use that energy for a cause that actually means something. Anybody wanting to make such a big issue over a petty thing like that needs to get a life.

J.W. Never mind any of

J.W.

Never mind any of this!! That latte she is holding must be 500 calories! What was she thinking! If any of us drank that, we couldn't eat anything for two days. Scarf, nothing!I can't believe you're missing the real issue here.

J.W. Who in the heck is

J.W.

Who in the heck is Michele Malkin? Someone we should be paying attention to? I do believe it is a fashion gaffe, and certainly object to women wearing scarves to conceal themselves and be deferential to "their men." How archaic! Let the sun shine in, Middle East, join the 21st century, and begin by: a)allowing women to drive - not allowed in Saudi Arabia, a country that has been made rich beyond their wildest dreams by our dollars for oil; b) allowing women to attend worship services alongside men; and c)considering women "people," and not just procreators. I could go on, but you get the drift. I just read today in the NY Times that there is a woman in Belgium who is actively encouraging the Taliban. If she likes the Taliban so much, she should go live with them - oh, oh - they don't allow WOMEN. I couldn't describe her, because she was wearing yards of black cloth that obscured everything. So it might seem like a tempest in a teapot, but Rachel, there are reasons why American women take that scarf very seriously. Susan B. Anthony could fill you in on that.

Tell Dunkin Donuts Rachel Ray is not a terrorist!

Hi All: Please sign a petition to tell Dunkin Donuts we don't believe Rachel Ray's scarf is a terrorist symbol and that we're disappointed in their decision to pull their ad and capitulate to the hysterical fringe of the right-wing blogosphere: http://www.eztrackz.com/tracking.aspx?id=85106
Thanks!

waste of time

This is silly the scarf is from urban outiftters! i have it in pink. and it was probably made in china or india, not even Palestine!

rachel ray, terrorist sympathizer

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I'd like to play the devil's advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!

Question...

Betty,

I hope I am not missing your point...

I probably know more Palestinians and Middle Easterners, who either lived a good portion of their lives in the Middle East or currently live there, than an average person born and raised in the US. I asked them about this because I wasn't sure is this piece of clothing is a symbols of terrorist or organizations that support "terror." I have yet to hear any of them say the clothing in question is worn to symbolize someone is a terrorist or supports terrorism. Certain versions of it may be used more to symbolized unity of Palestinians, that many people equate (wrongly) to supporting terrorism. There are other customized versions, like the one Ricky Martin was reported to wearing, that definitely make a political statement - similar to some customize version of some patriotic symbols that show hate as well.

I am wondering how you have seen this clothing directly related to terrorist support other than our interpretation from living abroad. Is the purpose of this clothing, when people wear it, show a support of "...governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief..."? I would like to hear from someone who as a different view ,who is over there experiencing it, than the people I already know there - a better view than people here who has no contact, except via news and their own biases.

I wholly agree with you that many things that have come to symboize hate in our world has started off as important cultural symbols and it is ignorance and some part racism and/or xenophobia that makes certain things taboo. I am not ready, yet, to put this clothing in the same category as a swastika, because, to me, and now, the swastika really has one meaning.

But now we have blogs, and one good thing is that maybe in some cases we can connect and educate others far away and we can fall away from trying to be "politically correct" and being just "correct."

This is absolutely ridiculous!

Give me a break! Rachel Ray is the least of your worries. She is a fantastic individual.

People think about the real important threats here. We live in a country where now everyone is paranoid. Let's move forward and get over the b.s. Who is Michele Malkin anyway? No-one I have ever heard of or really give a xxxx about what their opinion may reveal.

What we should really worry about....
Rising Oil Prices
Who the next prez will be << definitely worth worrying about
War and if it will ever end
Education and how bad it really is in our country
Healthcare
Crime increasing
amongst many other items... So let's get real here, quit harassing the simple folk! We have many other things to pick on.

There is a LOT of bad fashion out there, I mean c'mon! A simple scarf that is probably made in China. Now Urban Outfitters will probably pull their scarf because, WHO in their right mind would ever want to look, well, like a terrorist in a pretty pink design? LMAO.
