Top story: IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was denied bail at a court hearing on Monday and sent to Riker's Island jail in New York City. He faces a number of charges against him, including attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment, and could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
Strauss-Kahn is accused of sexually assaulting a maid at the Sofitel hotel in New York on Saturday. The maid told authorities that she entered what she believed to be Strauss-Kahn's empty suite, and he emerged from the bathroom and assaulted her. She ultimately broke free and told her story to the authorities.
Later that day, Strauss-Kahn was arrested on board an Air France flight minutes before it took off to France. His presence at the airport was one of the reasons cited by Judge Melissa Jackson, who presided over his hearing, for denying bail. "When I hear your client was at JFK airport about to board a flight, that raises some concerns," she said.
Strauss-Kahn had been considered one of the leading contenders in France's presidential election next year before his arrest. He will be held at Riker's Island at least until his next court hearing, scheduled for Friday. The IMF claimed that he could not claim diplomatic immunity, because he was in New York on a personal visit and paid for the trip with his own funds.
