Rahm Emanuel and Israel
It was inevitable that the world would eventually realize the unhappy fact that President-elect Barack Obama will not represent a complete break with the past 60 years of American diplomacy. By tapping Rahm Emanuel, a fierce partisan of Israel who volunteered as a mechanic in northern Israel during the first Gulf War, it is fair to say that process has already begun.
For example, what does Abu Jayab, the young Palestinian in Gaza who was cold-calling Americans, imploring them to vote for Obama, think about the fact that the president-elect's first major appointment is a man who is being hailed by the Israeli press as "our man in the White House?"
Rahm's father Benjamin Emanuel served in the Irgun, a Jewish terrorist group that targeted British and Palestinian civilians -- most famously with the King David Hotel bombing and the Deir Yassin massacre -- to advance the goal of creating a Zionist state. This week, the elder Emanuel has not exactly assuaged doubts about his son's pedigree. "Obviously, he will influence the president to be pro-Israel," he told the Israel daily Maariv, "Why wouldn't he be? What is he, an Arab?"
But Rahm Emanuel has always combined hyper-partisan rhetoric with relatively centrist policy views, and that may hold true for his stance on Israel as well. During his work on the Oslo Accords under President Clinton, he developed his closest relationships with the aides to the dovish Labor Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. If Emanuel is seen as sympathetic to Israel's plight, but also unafraid to use his legendary toughness to pressure Israeli leaders during the inevitable foot-dragging over the removal of key settlements in Gaza and the West Bank, he could be a key player in the upcoming Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

What the????
Sorry to see FP countenancing a "No Jews Allowed" policy. I would note that much of this post is more concerned with Emanuel's father...smacks of the McCain campaigns "Bill Ayres" strategy of guilt by association.
I would not have expected such a post on a reputable website.
Calm down, it's tiring to
Calm down, it's tiring to hear again these automatic anti-Jews concerns every time a journalist tries to do some critical thinking on the topic.
We are not talking about a problem that happened and ended 50 years ago starring Bill Ayres but a crisis that can’t find an end in the Middle East.
We all hope that Rahm Emanuel and the new administration will have a fair position on the Middle East problem, and that they will support peace in the region.
But Rahm has unfortunately a track record that may prove the contrary.
Seriously, Do we need to continue to weaken our country and Israel for a regional problem that can be resolved if the protagonists finally accept to play by the rules and stop their politics of deception?
There wont be any winners if a peace process is not put in place.
Rahm’s father comment is unwise. It’s really unintelligent to believe that Arabs and Jews can't leave together as they lived peacefully during several centuries.
No one was born with terrorist or criminal instincts. People are rather transformed by their environment and the injustices they face in their daily lives.
Palestinians and Israelis need to have the courage to accept some concessions to stop this crazy war, or they might have one day the Vatican also claiming a slice of Jerusalem.
Why not? Isn't the city a holly place for the three monotheistic religions?
Children of Immigrants
Israeli and Muslim, Together In The Oval Office
"There are so many intriguing facets of the new Administration that make it clear we are moving into a new century. One that has not yet been fully recognized is that the children of immigrants, Israeli and Muslim, will move into the Oval Office. That is the most significant facet of the selection of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff, in my mind...
But this is the beauty, the genius, of America. We are not captives of our past or our heritage. In some parts of the world, these two men would be peering at each other down the barrel of a gun. Here, in America, it is not even questioned that they can be the best of friends. I hope to see so many more visual examples of what it means to be an American in this Administration and hope we will join together to move our country, and the world, into a bright new future."

Another "Israel-firster" in the white house
It's quite disturbing to see that another "Israel-first" dual-citizen has found his way into the White House. Israel through AIPAC and Mossad agents like Emanuel have been in clear control over the past 20 years and it looks like this will continue in the future.
America just can't shed itself of foreign control....
America cannot seem to shed
America cannot seem to shed itself of silly conspiracy theories like these, either...
