At the National Press Club yesterday, Foreign Policy and The Center for Global Development (CGD) presented the 2008 Commitment to Development “Ideas in Action” Award to ONE, an advocacy organization that raised awareness of global poverty during the 2008 U.S. presidential elections.

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and Cindy McCain (with her husband John McCain at her side) were on hand to accept the award, along with three ONE volunteers from Florida, New Hampshire, and Colorado.

Through its ONE Vote ‘08 initiative, ONE mobilized 2 million supporters to sign petitions, raise awareness in their communities, and encourage the presidential candidates to explain how they would improve U.S. policies that affect poor people in developing countries.

Today, ONE continues to push President Barack Obama and other newly elected officials to keep their commitments to the world’s poor in the face of the global financial crisis.

Congratulations are in order today for Sir Lawrence Freedman, one of Britain's most distinguished historians, who has just won the 2009 Lionel Gelber Prize for his book, "A Choice of Enemies: America Confronts the Middle East."

The Gelber Prize is presented anually by the Lionel Gelber Foundation in partnership with Foreign Policy and the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto. It is awarded to the author of the world's best book on international affairs. Freedman's book examines three decades of U.S. involvement in the Middle East, reaching back to the presidency of Jimmy Carter.

"If you were to select only one book to understand the turmoil and confusion of events in the Middle East over the past 30 years, this is a perfect choice," said Noah Rubin, chair of the Lionel Gelber Prize Board.
